Ten Truths About Writing Competitions

1. Winning one does not mean you are a great writer
2. Losing one does not mean you are bad writer
3. If it feels sketchy, it probably is
4. Judges are often very subjective, especially with poetry
5. There's always something you can walk away with from every contest entered.
6. It's only a contest - not your life, not your career, so try to have fun with it
7. You will lose more than you win
8. It pays to read all the rules, especially about how to submit the entry
9. You don't have to tell people about contests you don't win
10. Hard work will pay off
